French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the President asking him to support the plan and saying there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major step forward, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official departed from office.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Now French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be looking for ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
