Mystery Rosy Ooze on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Raises Anxiety of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation

Agencies in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has appeared on a secluded beach, with certain experts anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Widespread Presence Across Beaches

The magenta-hued slime appeared along a stretch of a southern bay about 60km south of the capital. A comparable ooze has also been recorded on areas of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.

Specimens Gathered for Testing

Samples have been taken and sent to the regulatory body for examination. A official commented that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in reaction to shifts in nutrients, heat, precipitation or sunlight".

"The events are sometimes called crimson or rosy tides because the outbreaks can turn the water red," the official noted. "Not all phytoplankton events are toxic, with numerous types serving as a major source of energy for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."

"The most common cause of reddish water in local waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause glowing light shows at night."

Growing Occurrence Linked to Climate Change

Algae outbreaks happen naturally but their occurrence has increased in recent times, partly due to climate change and environmental waste that merge to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that normally serve as the ocean's waste processors. During a bloom, there is a rapid growth in their numbers that disrupts the proper operation of marine environments.

These phenomena have been equated with underwater bushfires and can continue to grow as long as circumstances are favorable. In more extreme scenarios, sensitive marine ecosystems can be devastated as marine life is eliminated or deprived of oxygen, supplying more nutrients for the proliferation.

Specialist Opinion on the Local Case

A marine expert, who helped investigate the beginning of the previous algal bloom said, based on pictures of the current situation, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".

"We have seen lots of these outbreaks around Tassie of late," she said.

The scientist said this organism did not produce toxins like the type involved in the previous harmful outbreak, but it does eat microscopic animals and "many fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were most at risk.

"Typically one notices a outbreak of this algae after a proliferation of something else, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she added.

Calls for Action and Community Health

A marine scientist, who collected samples of the pink sludge in Tasmania, said it seemed the potential proliferation had "increased notably" and proposed the fish farming business was the primary suspect, citing similar cases elsewhere.

"Thus the state needs to issue a clear message here, the officials and the EPA need to act to this. We need to study the specimens we've taken and we need to notify the public here," she stated.

The scientist said she had concerns for community health after feeling a numbness along her body while being sprayed with contaminated seawater.

An conservation group has reported dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a veteran activist labeling the circumstances as an "natural disaster" and demanding the state premier to visit and "take control the effort that government must be undertaking".
